Health
Health insurance for international students in Australia is known as OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover). The OSHC is a compulsory health insurance that all students must take out before traveling to Australia and a requirement for a student visa. The OSHC covers the minimum requirements approved by the Australian government, in order to have access to public health care without any complementary private insurance.
To activate your health insurance you will need your policy number, Australian address, Australian phone number. Having this information you will only need to download the insurance application on your cell phone and follow the steps.
Bank account
The banking sector in Australia is dominated by four banks (ANZ, Westpac, Commonwealth, NAB), but the most common for students are Commonwealth and NAB which do not charge fees to international students.
You can open a bank account online or you can visit a bank branch and do the paperwork in person.
What do you need? Passport, Australian address, Australian phone number, copy of VISA and copy of your COE.
Tax File Number (TFN)
What is the TFN (Tax File Number)?
The Tax File Number (TFN) is a number issued by the Australian Taxation Office to identify the tax affairs of each individual. Every student needs a Tax File Number to be able to work in Australia. Obtaining the TFN is free and through Will World Education’s sponsor plan we will help you to obtain it.
What is required?
Passport, Australian address and Australian phone number.
Australian Business Number (ABN)
¿What is ABN?
The Australian Business Number, better known by its acronym “ABN”, is a public identification number to work as a personal or independent company. Although it is not essential for everyone to work in Australia, the ABN number allows you to work under the self-employed regime in this country as a Personal or Business Legal Company.
Do I need ABN to work?
The answer is NO. The ABN is not mandatory unless you want to be self-employed (freelance). However, when you start looking for a job, you will find that many employers ask for the ABN as a requirement. It will be for these types of job offers that you will need to have registered with the Australian Self Employed Persons (ABN) scheme.
Benefits of working for ABN
On a tax level, if you come on a student visa, the first $18,200 dollars you bill per year is tax-free so working through your ABN can be a more than profitable option.
In Australia, registering as a freelancer is free. Here, compared to other countries, you will not have to pay a monthly fee.
In other words, when you work with TFN you work as an employee and if you work with ABN you are working as a service provider, legal sole proprietorship or independent company.
Working under the ABN allows you to organize the number of hours you work, so it is the perfect option to combine with a job under the TFN. Remember that with a student visa, you are limited to 24 hours per week and 40 hours during the vacations of your course.
When you file your tax return you will be able to deduct all those expenses related to the main activity of your business. So don’t forget to keep your expense receipts.
Telephony
Australia’s operators offer great technology, and competitive prices and sell prepaid credit, allowing you to take advantage of the best deals. In addition, you can buy credits in supermarkets, pharmacies and kiosks. Australia has few regulations for buying SIM cards.
